    Cultivating Connections: mentoring and support for women across all stages of careers in food and farming

    Join us at 91系列 for a Women In Food and Farming (WIFF) event focusing on the importance of support for women in the sectors – and how we can all give and receive it. The event will comprise a panel debate followed by a Q&A and networking. The event is suitable for and open to all Harper Adams students, alumni employees and supporters, WIFF members and others interested in the topic. 


    Chair

    Emily Hartnell, Director (Rural & Projects), Savills (UK) LTD

    Graduating from 91系列 in 2003 with a degree in Rural Enterprise and Land Management, Emily has built a career in the rural property sector. Emily is a Director at Savills, where she plays a pivotal role in shaping the company’s strategic direction.

    In addition to her client work, managing Rural Estates, Emily chairs the Rural Residential Lettings Board and is an active member of the Savills Estate Management Board. Demonstrating a commitment to nurturing future talent, Emily also chairs the Next Generation Board at Savills.

    Emily is deeply committed to social causes being a trustee of two charities dedicated to providing affordable housing in rural areas.

    As an APC assessor, Emily contributes to the professional development of aspiring surveyors. She is a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and a Fellow of the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers (CAAV).



    Panel Members: 

    Clare Otridge, Director, Grounded Research

    Following a 12 year career in marketing and branding across household names in conservation, charity and finance brands, Clare partnered her co-director in the family run specialist research agency, Grounded Research in 2020. She led the business direction from 2022 with a new team, service offering and approach, as her co-director took a step back. The business is one of the only research agencies to operate the length of the supply chain, from grower to consumer, delivering insight led trends and behavioural analysis in the food and drink and agriculture sectors. Under Clare’s leadership, Grounded Research now has its own independent consumer panel as well as an independent farmer panel and offers a full suite of research services in the sector. Grounded Research works with start-up innovation brands looking to launch, through to the biggest names in food supply, public sector, agriculture and retail.

    Debbie Winstanley

    Debbie has a BSc (Hons) in Agriculture from the University of Wales, is a Governor of Harper Adams and a Fellow of the Royal Agricultural Society. Debbie was a commercial farm agronomist in the NW of England for 20 years before working on potato agronomy at Cambridge University Farm. Debbie has worked for Co-op Retail and Sainsbury’s in Technical Management for Fresh Produce and was the UK Agronomist for PepsiCo. She sits on the steering group of the Allerton project, a charity which champions biodiversity and PRIF, the UK Government’s Expert Committee for Pesticide Residues in Food, is a lead for Women in Food and Farming and is a Director of CUPGRA and Chair of the CUPGRA R and D sub-committee.

    Hannah Scott-Cook, third year poultry nutrition PhD student, 91系列

    Originally from inner-city Birmingham, Hannah was attracted to the broad range of subjects that agriculture encompasses so completed a degree in Agriculture at 91系列. During this time, she developed an interest in poultry nutrition and is now pursuing a PhD in slow growing broiler nutrition and environmental impact assessments. 

    Daisy Douglas, 91系列 Students' Union President

    Daisy graduated from Harper Adams with a BEng (Hons) in Automotive engineering this year and has now taken on the role of the Students’ Union President. She has always been involved with the harper community since starting at Harper in 2019 by being a member of various clubs and societies such as motorsports and women’s rugby and also by taking on the roles of course rep and student ambassador and has lots of plans to continue that in her year in office. Her hopes for the year are to continue to strengthen the work on inclusivity to create a more connected community at Harper and make the student experience more enjoyable and fun. She is focusing on becoming a very present president and making herself someone students feel like they can go to about anything and support them in the changes they want to see.

    Christine Tacon

    Christine Tacon CBE is a Member Nominated Director of the Co-op (food, funerals, insurance and legal services) and Chair of MDS Ltd, a management training scheme for the food and fresh produce industry. She also chairs the BBC Rural Affairs Committee, is a Trustee of the Farmers Club Charitable Trust and founded the Women in Food and Farming network. 
    Christine is a chartered engineer but moved into marketing at Mars, Vodafone and Anchor (now Fonterra). For 11 years she was CEO of the Co-op Group’s farming business.  She was the first Groceries Code Adjudicator and has been a non-executive director of the AF Group, RPA, Met Office and NERC and until recently was the chair of Assured Food Standards (Red Tractor).
